IBM reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2014 income, and the results reflect a tough environment for the computing giant, buffeted by uncertain global markets and shifting technology paradigms. IBM reported its revenues were $92.8 billion for the year, down 6% from the previous year. Net income for 2014 was $15.8 billion, compared with $16.9 billion in the year-ago period, a decrease of 7%.

Cloud Foundry Foundation, a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) open source project, has been launched as an independent non-profit foundation. The Cloud Foundry Foundation will be managed as a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project and operate under a system of open governance created by a team of open source experts from founding Platinum Members EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, Pivotal, SAP, and VMware. "SAP is committed to contributing to open-source PaaS technologies, including integration of technologies such as the SAP HANA® platform and Internet of Things as part of SAP HANA Cloud Platform," said Björn Goerke, executive vice president and corporate officer, Product and Innovation Technology, SAP.

Espresso Logic is adding data virtualization for mobile and web app back-end developers to its reactive programming-based back-end-as-a-service (BaaS). "We have a very unique technology that we have developed called reactive programming. As a user, whenever the spreadsheet is changed it will always recalculate itself and give you a result. Up until now, no one has really used this method for back-end development," explained R. Paul Singh, CEO of Espresso Logic.

There's good news and bad news on the cybersecurity front, an IBM study finds. Over the past 2 years, there has been a 50% decline in the number of cyberattacks against U.S. retailers. However, the number of records stolen from them remains at near record highs. IBM security researchers report that in 2014, cyber attackers still managed to steal more than 61 million records from retailers despite the decline in attacks, demonstrating cyber criminals' increasing sophistication and efficiency. Ironically, while Black Friday and Cyber Monday were identified as the two biggest shopping days of the year by IBM's Digital Analytics Benchmark, cyber attackers reduced their activity across all industries on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, rather than taking action.

SOA Software, a cloud services management vendor, announced an updated solution that provides broader support for API description languages including RAML, Swagger, WSDL, and WADL. The vendor's API Management platform now supports for multiple API Description Languages (API DL), intended to help enterprises secure, manage, and monetize APIs described in RAML, Swagger, WSDL, or WADL. Oracle has introduced its latest-generation NAS storage system, the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4-4. A plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager enables monitoring and provisioning at the share, LUN or project level for all Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance models for end-to-end management visibility across the enterprise. Rackspace has announced its affiliation with the OpenPOWER Foundation, and is now an official member. With its membership in the OpenPower Foundation, Rackspace says it also expects to provide benefit to two other communities: OpenStack and the Open Compute Project. Rackspace announced its affiliation with OpenPOWER in a blog authored by Aaron Sullivan, ?senior director and distinguished engineer at Rackspace.
