IBM has announced that the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is generally available for IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE. According to IBM, the availability of OpenShift for Z and LinuxONE is a major milestone for both hybrid multi-cloud and for enterprise computing. OpenShift supports cloud-native applications being built once and deployed anywhere—and now extends this to on-premise enterprise servers such as IBM Z and LinuxONE. The offering is the result of the collaboration between the IBM and Red Hat development teams and discussions with early adopter clients.

New research on the strategic importance of COBOL indicates that 70% of enterprises favor modernization as an approach for implementing strategic change compared to the replacing/retiring of key COBOL applications as it continues to offer a low-risk, and effective means of transforming IT to support digital business initiatives. The survey was fielded by Micro Focus on the heels of the 60th anniversary of the COBOL computing language last September.

Protecting endpoints and preventing the spread of infected systems is a critical concern for organizations of all sizes, according to research revealing that attackers can move off of an initially compromised system in 4.5 hours, on average. Further, new research shows that the average dwell time—the time it takes to detect attackers operating within an enterprise network—increased an average of 10 days in 2019, from 85 to 95 days, highlighting the escalating requirement to secure endpoints and prevent an adversary from establishing a foothold.

Hazelcast, an open source in-memory computing platform, has announced an additional $28.5 million in funding, bringing its total Series D round to $50 million. Hazelcast raised an initial $21.5 million in Series D funding in June but, given the interest from the investor community, the company said, it expanded the round.

Arvind Krishna has been elected as the CEO of IBM and a member of its board of directors. In this role, Krishna succeeds Virginia "Ginni" Rometty, IBM chairman, president, and CEO, who will continue as executive chairman of the board and serve through the end of the year, when she will retire after almost 40 years with the company. Announcing the executive changes on January 30, IBM said that Krishna, who is currently IBM SVP for Cloud and Cognitive Software, and was a principal architect of the company's acquisition of Red Hat, would assume the job on April 6, 2020. James Whitehurst, IBM SVP and CEO of Red Hat, was also elected by the board as IBM president, effective April 6, 2020
