The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a task order to Unisys to design and install an integrated suite of security software tools as well as the underlying infrastructure supporting those tools. The tool suite will give the USDA the ability to monitor and secure the infrastructure and data for the department's 29 component agencies.

Trusted Computer Solutions (TCS), a developer of cross-domain, operating system and network security solutions, has announced that it has partnered with Vicom Infinity, an IBM Premier Business Partner System z reseller, to offer TCS' automated operating system hardening tool to customers across all industries, especially finance and insurance, throughout North America, Canada and Australia. Security Blanket will enable Vicom Infinity mainframe users to assess Linux VMs and identify security vulnerabilities using pre-defined industry or customized security guidelines, and automatically configure the Linux VMs to a hardened state.

Oracle introduced the Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-8 at Oracle OpenWorld. The new configuration extends the Oracle Exadata Database Machine product family with a high-capacity system for large OLTP, data warehousing and consolidated workloads. "The data volumes now are huge, and they are going to keep getting bigger and as they grow rapidly, you will need more and more power," said Oracle president Mark Hurd, commenting on the release during a keynote at the Oracle conference.

Commenting on the debut of the portfolio during a keynote that highlighted major OpenWorld announcements, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, explained that Oracle Fusion Applications takes the best features of PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, the Oracle E-Business Suite, and Siebel and re-implements them on top of a modern middleware infrastructure entirely written in Java.

All this data is streaming into and through enterprises from transactions, remote devices, partner sites and user-generated content, with formats varying from structured, relational data to graphics and videos.

IBM announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire BLADE Network Technologies (BLADE), a privately held company based in Santa Clara, CA. BLADE specializes in software and devices that route data and transactions to and from servers. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and applicable regulatory reviews. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Progress Software Corporation has released two new database drivers intended to expand critical connectivity features to more databases and formats. The new releases, Progress DataDirect Connect for ODBC release 6.1 and the Progress DataDirect Connect for JDBC release 4.2, include expanded bulk load capabilities that will improve the ability to stream bulk data from one database to another, and increased breadth of support for additional application configurations.

PostgreSQL 9.0 includes more than a dozen major improvements that enhance every aspect of database application design and performance, including built-in replication and hot standby capabilities that give PostgreSQL 9.0 the high availability required for the "scale out" and failover architectures that characterize cloud computing and other demanding application environments, as well as 64-bit Windows support. The new release also simplifies major upgrades by removing the need for the "dump/load data" procedure required in prior versions and instead performs an in-place upgrade, which is much easier and faster.

IBM and Netezza Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement for IBM to acquire Netezza, a publicly held company based in Marlborough, Mass., in a cash transaction at a price of $27 per share or at a net price of approximately $1.7 billion, after adjusting for cash. The purchase of Netezza, a provider of high-performance analytics in a data warehousing appliance, will expand IBM's business analytics initiatives to help clients gain faster insights into their business information, with increased performance at a lower cost. The acquisition is subject to Netezza shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions, and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Phoenix Software International has announced the release of its z/OS JES2 and JES3 interactive spool browse and system management product, supporting a Java Application Programming Interface (API). At the recent VMworld 2010 conference, Zmanda, a provider of open source based backup solutions and a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, said it has begun shipping enhancements to its VMware Backup Client for Amanda Enterprise (AE). In addition to running a full image-level backup of a live virtual machine (VM), users now have the ability to run faster and more efficient block-level differential backups of VMs. During recovery, the Zmanda's VMware backup client will automatically combine a full backup image with the relevant differential backup image.

IBM today announced its intention to acquire Netezza, a publicly held company based in Marlborough, Mass., in a cash transaction at a price of $27 per share or at a net price of approximately $1.7 billion, after adjusting for cash. Business analytics is one of the fastest growing segments in the IT industry, observed Arvind Krishna, general manager of IBM's Software Group's Information Management business, during an IBM press teleconference to discuss the significance of the planned acquisition. By bringing the simplicity, ease of deployment, and speed of Netezza to IBM, the acquisition will help IBM accelerate its initiatives "to bring analytics to the masses," added Jim Baum, president and CEO of Netezza. The transaction, which is subject to Netezza shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2010.
