The big challenge of managing data today is not simply the high volume or the fact that much of it is unstructured. NoSQL database vendor Couchbase has added on a $60 million series E-round of financing, led by two new investors, WestSummit and Accel Growth Fund. According to the company, the new investment is further evidence of the growth of the global big data market.

To meet emerging challenges in the enterprise fueled by the expansion of cloud, mobile and IoT, Oracle has introduced SOA Suite 12c with simplified integration capabilities. "We are seeing a lot of demand for any-to-any integration," said Amit Zavery, group vice president, Fusion Middleware, Oracle. "We have more than 5,000 customers using SOA Suite today," he said, adding that this release moves the needle even further and allows Oracle to differentiate against the competition more starkly. "The cloud and mobile capabilities will be very useful for customers looking for one, out-of-the-box solution for any kind of integration."

Violin Memory, Inc., a provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances, has announced the availability of the Violin 6200 Series All Flash Array for the SAP HANA platform. Certification for the solution with SAP HANA was achieved by working in conjunction with the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto, Calif. The new SAP-certified solution complements existing solutions from Violin for SAP IQ software and SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE).

Dell has extended its longstanding collaboration with SAP. Splunk, aprovider of a software platform for real-time operational intelligence, and Syncsort, a provider of big data software, have formed a technical alliance aimed at unlocking insights from machine data generated by mainframe systems, a critical and major source of corporate data. The companies say they have joint customers, including top telcos, retailers, insurance, healthcare and financial organizations, who rely heavily on mainframes for critical business operations, but have had difficulty leveraging mainframe data for business insights.

A complete, integrated and open platform engineered for large-scale cloud environments, Solaris 11.2 combines OpenStack, SDN technology, clustering, and virtualization with an enterprise-class OS. Oracle Solaris is one of two operating system options for Oracle Exadata, and is described by Oracle as a key building block that provides mission-critical reliability, performance, and security that are essential for database consolidation. According to Hurd, cloud and engineered systems are both driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently.

Oracle has joined the OpenDaylight Project as a Silver Member, and is expanding its application-driven software defined networking (SDN) capabilities in Oracle Solaris 11.2 with plans to integrate OpenDaylight SDN. The aim with the new integration is to help customers improve service quality and take advantage of apps-to-disk SLAs through compatibility with a range of SDN devices, applications and services. It will also allow them to use a common and open SDN platform with OpenStack to manage Oracle Solaris-based clouds.

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 4 adds features to support rapid enterprise-wide adoption of database, middleware and infrastructure services in the private cloud, driven by an enhanced API-enabled service catalog. Since Enterprise Manager 12c was released in October 2011, the focus has been in three key areas - cloud lifecycle management, integrated stack management capabilities, and scaling up the Enterprise Manager framework itself for use in high scale, highly secure environments, noted Dan Koloski, senior director of product management and business development in Oracle's Systems and Applications Group, in a recent interview. "This release, 12c Release 4, contains improvements in all three of those areas."

Ariba, an SAP company that provides cloud-based procurement solutions, is moving to SAP HANA, the company's in-memory platform for real-time computing. The initial step, involving the transition of Ariba Spend Visibility has been completed and the company is now shifting the Ariba Network to the platform. "We have been running cloud operations here for 15 years at Ariba, and we have a mature cloud platform, said SAP Ariba engineering vice president Mark Dao.
