Moving infrastructure, databases, or software into the cloud is no longer a bleeding edge decision. Many organizations have implemented this successfully with great benefits, and more continue to do so. It was not that long ago that we started learning about cloud technologies and capabilities. Technologists listened to webinars and read about the possibilities of such a paradigm shift with cynicism. It sounded great, but what about the practicalities, cost, and risk? The only organizations that seemed to embrace this new landscape were technology companies, while the rest of us stood on the sidelines watching and, on occasion, snickering. We thought nothing would ever replace our data centers. It appears we were wrong … it's time to embrace the paradigm shift.

Salesforce has announced the next generation of Lightning Connect, its service that allows developers and business admins to build real-time integrations with external data sources without writing any code. The updated service, dubbed Salesforce Connect, allows Salesforce users to access and manage data in external apps, whether on-premise or cloud, directly from Salesforce. The goal with the new offering, Kunzle says, is to allow workers to proactively manage customer data so they can connect and collaborate in an agile way, and be more responsive to customers.

IBM is acquiring Clearleap to boost its IBM Cloud platform and accelerate the delivery of video service as a strategic source of data for business. The acquisition is part of IBM's moves to help clients improve access to "dark data" which, because it is unstructured and dark to computer systems, cannot be effectively managed or exploited.

IBM and Xilinx, Inc., a provider of data center efficiency tools, announced a multi-year strategic collaboration to enable higher performance and energy-efficient data center applications through Xilinx FPGA-enabled workload acceleration on IBM POWER-based systems. SAP SE is offering the option to run the SAP Business One Cloud solution powered by the SAP HANA platform at data centers run by SAP, providing an end-to-end SAP-branded experience. Partners will now have three deployment options for the subscription-based offering of SAP Business One Cloud, including running in a partner's private hosted cloud, in a cloud infrastructure hosted by a third party, or in data centers run by SAP. Taking advantage of this offer, says SAP, will allow partners to help SME (small and midsize enterprise) customers gain the benefit of streamlined operations. The offering will be available first in North America, with expansion planned to Europe and Asia in 2016.

SUSE is teaming up with SAP on the Cloud Foundry Foundation's BOSH OpenStack Cloud Provider Interface (CPI) project, helping enable Cloud Foundry users to effortlessly run applications of their choice on cloud networks. CloudBerry Lab, a provider of backup and management solutions for cloud storage services, has introduced CloudBerry Backup for Oracle Database, which enables backups to be easily stored in the Oracle Database Backup Cloud with a data restore capability.
