The increase in use of digital technology within enterprises is causing a massive influx of the amount of data produced from cloud, mobile, IoT, social media, and more. Because of this deluge, many companies are simply filtering data into holding grounds for native data they haven't had time to process, known as "data lakes," which often go unmanaged. Continuing toward architecting a single cloud platform that is tuned for AI and data, IBM announced that it is expanding its network of cloud data centers with four new ones, including two in the UK (London), one in Australia (Sydney) and one in the U.S. (San Jose). IBM intends to be the first major cloud provider to launch bare-metal servers powered by next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Emerging from stealth mode this week, Aparna Systems announced the Orca µCloud and Orca µServer—providing an open software Cloud-in-a-Box solution. Going beyond "hyperconvergence," Aparna says it provides "ultra-convergence" with the combination of compute, storage and networking resources in a compact, energy-efficient system. "Hyper-convergence is compute and storage with a hypervisor on it. In our case it is that plus networking.
