Increasingly, cloud services are seen as a vital resource in the data manager's toolkit. There's good reason why cloud is a preferred option: There are simply not enough on-premise resources to keep up with the growth of data management requirements. Organizations keep evolving, business priorities keep shifting, data compliance requirements keep expanding, and user demands keep growing. Already, one-fourth of corporate data is being maintained by cloud providers, and data managers intend to move as much of their data environments into the cloud as soon as they can.

Based in Plano, Texas, ClearDB is a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) provider that has deployed and managed more than one million cloud-based databases worldwide through its software platform, and is a private MySQL-as-a-Service provider.

MariaDB started off their annual conference on February 26, MariaDB OpenWorks 2019, with a bang, making new announcements and embarking on new innovations for 2019. MariaDB OpenWorks took place on February 25 -27 at the Conrad Hotel in New York City. The company is introducing a new Enterprise Server that will support customers with mission-critical applications by delivering a database engineered for greater reliability and stability.

Veeam Software, a provider of backup solutions that enable intelligent data management, is releasing a Veeam Plug-in for SAP HANA, a SAP Certified Integration for SAP HANA. Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4 provides an SAP-certified backup and recovery solution, allowing enterprise customers to seamlessly integrate native SAP HANA backup with the Veeam Backup & Replication solution, further strengthening the enterprise-readiness of the Veeam Availability Platform.

At the Cloud Economic Summit in San Francisco, a new consortium called the FinOps Foundation was announced to share best practices for managing the cost of cloud computing. According to the foundation, cloud spending is now a material amount of total IT spend. Similar to the way DevOps ushered in a new way of thinking about development and operations, the foundation says, the FinOps operating model is a combination of systems, best practices, and culture that aims to bring financial accountability to the variable spend model of cloud.

Splice Machine, which provides a data platform for operational AI, has closed $16 million in additional funding. The new round brings Splice Machine's total funding to $58 million to date, and follows a year of record growth in which the company tripled its revenues and customer counts since its last financing with customer wins in the financial services, healthcare, supply chain, and energy industries.

The Open Mainframe Project (OMP) has announced that Zowe, an open source software framework for the mainframe, is now production-ready less than 6 months after launching. Zowe 1.0 consists of core technologies enabling modern interfaces for web applications on z/OS, a new command line interface and expansion of platform REST API capabilities to help make the  z/OS environment more "cloud-like" and improve integration in hybrid cloud environments.
