Mayo Clinic and IBM are planning to use a specially designed version of Watson, the IBM's Linux-powered cognitive computer, to match patients more quickly with appropriate clinical trials. A proof-of-concept phase is currently underway, with the intent to introduce it into clinical use in early 2015.

SAP has agreed to acquire Concur, a provider of travel and expense (T&E) management software, for $8.3 billion. "The acquisition of Concur is consistent with our relentless focus on the business network," said Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, in a statement released by the company. "We are making a bold move to innovate the future of business within and between companies. With Ariba, Fieldglass and Concur, SAP is the undisputed business network company."

Just after Oracle announced that Larry Ellison would take on the role of executive chairman and CTO, and be succeeded as CEO by Safra Catz and Mark Hurd, the three Oracle executives hosted the company's fiscal 2015 Q1 earnings call. Ellison noted that at Oracle OpenWorld, which starts September 27, 2014, the company will be rolling out its new database cloud service with its new multitenant DBaaS offerings. "Our customers and ISVs can move any of their existing applications and databases to the Oracle Cloud with the push of a button," said Ellison.

In what is being heralded as an epic change at Oracle, Larry Ellison, the charismatic CEO of Oracle, is stepping down and will be succeeded by Safra Catz and Mark Hurd who will share the CEO position. Despite the widespread pronouncements that this is the end of an era and that Ellison is relinquishing his membership in the exclusive club of rock-star tech leaders that has included Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates, some industry insiders believe that is simply not the case. Ellison, they say, will remain a force to be reckoned with at Oracle.

Ericcson and SAP have announced plans for Ericsson to offer SAP's cloud-based enterprise mobility management portfolio Mobile Secure combined with an IT managed service offering, thereby expanding Ericsson's portfolio of services available for its more than 400 mobile network operators. Worldwide, Ericsson manages networks that serve 600 million subscribers and additionally provides managed services for networks that serve 1 billion subscribers. The companies cited estimates that the enterprise mobility management market will reach $2.1 billion by 2016.

Enhancements in Yellowfin 7.1 are concentrated on extending its capabilities in core technical areas by increasing the number of visualizations supported by Yellowfin's Auto Chart functionality and improving CSV support. Oracle's Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been enhanced to provide large performance and memory increases compared to the previous generation. Hardware enhancements include 50% more database compute cores, using the Intel Xeon E7 v2 15-core processors, and up to 6TB of memory per compute node for a total of 12TB per rack. The result, says Oracle, is that the Exadata Database Machine X4-8 can consolidate hundreds of databases and can run massive databases entirely in-memory.
