Syncsort, a provider of big data and mainframe software, has completed the acquisition of UK-based William Data Systems, a provider of advanced network monitoring and security software products for the IBM z Systems z/OS mainframe platform. According to Syncsort, because the mainframe is a high-volume transactional supercomputer, the networking and security data collected by the William Data product suite is particularly valuable to fast-growing big data and analytical platforms.

GridGain Systems, provider of open source and commercial in-memory data fabric solutions, is introducing a new release of the GridGain In-Memory Data Fabric Enterprise Edition built on Apache Ignite. Available for download in early in Q2, the new release includes ease-of-use and automation features to help simplify the deployment of the software as well as the migration from legacy in-memory data grids.

Tamr, Inc., has introduced a new version of its scalable data unification platform that lets enterprises continuously deliver better data to decision-makers. In a related announcement, Tamr also unveiled two data-unification solutions for specific, high-value data variety challenges: Tamr for CDISC and Tamr for Procurement. Founded in 2013 by big data entrepreneurs Andy Palmer and Michael Stonebraker, Tamr is based in Cambridge, Mass.

In the early days of data warehousing, lines were very simple. The data warehouse reflected the business. In providing this reflection, data was summarized, data was cleansed, data was standardized, and data was even drastically reformatted for legibility and reporting usage. But, the big rule of thumb, the never-to-be-crossed line, was that the data warehouse did not create new data.

Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has announced plans to acquire Pentaho Corporation, a big data integration and business analytics company with an open source-based platform for diverse big data deployments. According to Hitachi, the acquisition helps to fulfill its strategy of delivering business innovations that integrate machine data, information technology, and analytics to distill value from big data and the Internet of Things. The acquisition of Pentaho is expected to be complete by June 2015.

Splice Machine has announced that it has achieved Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) certification by completing the required integration testing with Hortonworks Data Platform. Espresso Logic is adding data virtualization for mobile and web app back-end developers to its reactive programming-based back-end-as-a-service (BaaS). "We have a very unique technology that we have developed called reactive programming. As a user, whenever the spreadsheet is changed it will always recalculate itself and give you a result. Up until now, no one has really used this method for back-end development," explained R. Paul Singh, CEO of Espresso Logic.

Rackspace has announced new support for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 In-Memory Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and AlwaysOn Availability. Rackspace now powers more than 10,000 compute instances running Microsoft SQL Server on its private and public clouds. By combining In-Memory OLTP with Managed High Availability, Rackspace says it can help customers speed up OLTP workloads to up to 30x while enabling greater uptime.

There's good news and bad news on the cybersecurity front, an IBM study finds. Over the past 2 years, there has been a 50% decline in the number of cyberattacks against U.S. retailers. However, the number of records stolen from them remains at near record highs. IBM security researchers report that in 2014, cyber attackers still managed to steal more than 61 million records from retailers despite the decline in attacks, demonstrating cyber criminals' increasing sophistication and efficiency. Ironically, while Black Friday and Cyber Monday were identified as the two biggest shopping days of the year by IBM's Digital Analytics Benchmark, cyber attackers reduced their activity across all industries on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, rather than taking action.

Cloud is being embraced strongly at Oracle. That is the message loud and clear from the company, which brought its CloudWorld to New York City on January 13. During the event, which drew customers, analysts, and thought leaders, Oracle offered an overview of its cloud strategy and the progress the company has made thus far in addressing consumers and enterprise constituents in the cloud. Oracle's cloud strategy is very simple, said Thomas Kurian, president, Oracle Product Development. The idea is to bring Oracle's business applications, technology, software, database, middleware, analytic tools and infrastructure "to any customer anywhere in the world through the internet browser."
