According to a recent report by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), global spending on blockchain solutions is expected to reach $2.1 billion this year. However, there's a void of blockchain expertise in enterprises. A Gartner Research survey shows that around 60 percent of IT leaders find blockchain interesting, but aren't clear on what exactly they should do with it. Enterprises want to hire developers with blockchain experience, although candidates for those roles are few and far between.

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire the software development platform GitHub. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub's current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to EVP Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives.

With the E.U.'s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to go into effect in less than 2 weeks, new research shows U.S. companies are still unprepared. The research garnered responses from U.S. companies with annual revenue greater than $10 million regarding their understanding of and preparedness for GDPR, uncovering two areas where companies are significantly exposed to legal risk by these new regulations. Penalties go into effect on May 25, 2018, and non-compliant organizations risk triggering fines up to 20 euros million or 4% of global revenue, whichever is higher.

Aside from data, "governance" is the most used term in data governance. Duh! It's in the name, right? But not only is it the most used, it is also the most misused and misinterpreted. The general perception of the term "governance" generates a widespread misunderstanding of the purpose of data governance. With excitement and fear rapidly growing around the use of data in businesses across all industries, data governance is becoming a hotter-than-hot topic! But, as with many corporate buzzwords, the more viral the term and concepts of data governance become, the more inappropriately used and abused they are.
