RainStor, a provider of an enterprise database for managing and analyzing all historical data, has introduced RainStor FastForward, a new product that enables customers to re-instate data from Teradata tape archives (also known as BAR for Backup, Archive and Restore) and move it to RainStor for query. The new RainStor FastForward product resolves a pressing challenge for Teradata customers that need to archive their Teradata warehouse data to offline tape, which can make it difficult to access and query that data when business and regulatory users require it, Deirdre Mahon, vice president of marketing, RainStor, explained in an interview.

Syncsort, a provider of big data integration solutions, has announced the availability of MFX ZPCopy, a new software product that can offload mainframe copy processing to zIIP engines, and can be licensed separately as an add-on to Syncsort MFX. After looking at mainframe processing from several customers, Syncsort realized that copy-related processing accounts for hundreds of hours of CPU processing time annually and contributes to batch window bottlenecks, inflating software costs and making it more difficult to meet SLA, said Jorge Lopez, director of product marketing at Syncsort, in an interview.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has released a new version of its data replication software intended to address requirements for big data analytics, business intelligence, business continuity and disaster recovery initiatives. The technology is aimed at helping customers increase their confidence in their data, their speed in gaining business value out of their data, and sharpen their skill sets to address big data challenges."We have to hold that data to the same standards, manage it, and govern it appropriately for the enterprise. Pentaho has launched Pentaho Business Analytics 5.0. The new release represents a redesign of the company's data integration and analytics platform, and provides analytics for big data-driven businesses supported by more than 250 new features and improvements. Pentaho Business Analytics 5.0 is the culmination of years of work on development and also incorporates the result of usability studies on the Pentaho Business Analytics interface. "This is really an evolution of our platform as a whole. The new partnering model, a component of the SAP PartnerEdge program, is intended to help partners create and monetize innovative, specific applications in the mobile, cloud, database or high-performance in-memory areas. Progress Software announced availability of new data connectivity and application capabilities as part of its Progress Pacific application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) for building and managing business applications on any cloud, mobile or social platform. "Pacific is a platform running in the cloud that is targeted at small and medium-size businesses, ISVs and departmental IT," John Goodson, chief product officer at Progress Software, explained in an interview. Instead of requiring a highly trained IT staff to build applications, Goodson says, the platform provides a visual design paradigm that allows users with limited skills to build powerful applications that can quickly connect to any data sources.

Pentaho Corporation, a provider of big data analytics and data integration software, has formed an alliance with Splunk Inc. to provide a big data analytics solution that enables business users to analyze machine data that is generated by websites, applications, servers, storage, network, mobile and other devices, including system sensors. As a result of the new alliance, Splunk customers will have the ability to use Pentaho's platform to do two things, said Eddie White, executive vice president, business development at Pentaho, in an interview.

NuoDB has announced the last release of its current product version and a technology preview of some upcoming second-generation features available later in 2013. The preview is contained in the free download of the new NuoDB Starlings Release 1.2. The NewSQL approach is gaining greater acceptance, said Barry Morris, founder and CEO of NuoDB, in an interview. "What people are saying back to us is that they are getting all of the features of NoSQL without throwing SQL or transactions away. Oracle is advancing the role of Java for IoT (Internet of Things) with the latest releases of its Oracle Java Embedded product portfolio - Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.3 and Oracle Java ME Software Development Kit (SDK) 3.3, a complete client Java runtime and toolkit optimized for microcontrollers and other resource-constrained devices. Oracle is also introducing the Oracle Java Platform Integrator program to provide partners with the ability to customize Oracle Java ME Embedded products to reach different device types and market segments. Fueled by machine-to-machine (M2M) data, the Internet of Things promises to make our lives easier and better, from more efficient energy delivery and consumption to mobile health innovations where doctors can monitor patients from afar. IBM says it is accelerating its Linux on Power initiative with the new PowerLinux 7R4 server as well as new software and middleware applications geared for big data, analytics and next generation Java applications in an open cloud environment. According to IBM, the new PowerLinux 7R4 server, built on the same Power Systems platform running IBM's Watson cognitive computing solution, can provide clients the performance required for the new business-critical and data-intensive workloads increasingly being deployed in Linux environments. IBM is also expanding the portfolio of software for Power Systems with the availability of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and EnterpriseDB database software, each optimized for Linux on Power.

After four years of operating BigCouch in production, Cloudant has merged the BigCouch code back into the open source Apache CouchDB project. Cloudant provides a database-as-a-service and CouchDB serves as the foundation of Cloudant's technology. The company developed BigCouch, an open source variant of CouchDB, to support large-scale, globally distributed applications.There are three main reasons Cloudant is doing this, Adam Kocoloski, co-founder and CTO at Cloudant, told 5 Minute Briefing in an interview.

Symantec has released Data Insight 4.0, the latest version of its unstructured data governance solution, which provides insight into the ownership and usage of unstructured data, such as documents, presentations, spreadsheets and emails. Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. "The key problem with big data is that there are not enough people that are skilled at the big data tools to use them effectively," Eve notes.

Software AG has agreed to acquire Apama, a platform for complex event processing (CEP) and CEP-powered solutions, from Progress Software. Apama CEP allows organizations to correlate and analyze business activities across multiple data streams in real-time and take immediate action in response. Dell and Oracle have announced an expanded worldwide alliance, through which the two companies will introduce a new x86 infrastructure offering that combines Dell's hardware with Oracle's software. As part of the agreement, Oracle has named Dell a preferred x86 partner, and Dell has named Oracle a preferred enterprise infrastructure partner, including Oracle Linux. The expanded partnership represents an extension of Oracle's engineered systems strategy, said Oracle president Mark Hurd.
