In addition, the 4.5 release adds the ability to merge Cassandra data with Hadoop for integration of operational and historical data. The new release has been certified with Hadoop vendors Cloudera and Hortonworks and DSE has been certified for their platforms.

RainStor has added an archive application for Hadoop 2.0 with its latest release, RainStor 6. Building on RainStor's existing interactive SQL-on-Hadoop stack, the new archive application features XQuery for hierarchical data and documents, and extends analytics support to SQL 2003.

NoSQL database vendor Couchbase has added on a $60 million series E-round of financing, led by two new investors, WestSummit and Accel Growth Fund. According to the company, the new investment is further evidence of the growth of the global big data market.

To meet emerging challenges in the enterprise fueled by the expansion of cloud, mobile and IoT, Oracle has introduced SOA Suite 12c with simplified integration capabilities. "We are seeing a lot of demand for any-to-any integration," said Amit Zavery, group vice president, Fusion Middleware, Oracle. "We have more than 5,000 customers using SOA Suite today," he said, adding that this release moves the needle even further and allows Oracle to differentiate against the competition more starkly. "The cloud and mobile capabilities will be very useful for customers looking for one, out-of-the-box solution for any kind of integration."

Violin Memory, Inc., a provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances, has announced the availability of the Violin 6200 Series All Flash Array for the SAP HANA platform. Certification for the solution with SAP HANA was achieved by working in conjunction with the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto, Calif. Dell has extended its longstanding collaboration with SAP. The companies say they have joint customers, including top telcos, retailers, insurance, healthcare and financial organizations, who rely heavily on mainframes for critical business operations, but have had difficulty leveraging mainframe data for business insights.

Fusion-io, a developer of flash-based PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) hardware and software solutions has agreed to be acquired by SanDisk Corp., a provider of flash storage solutions. The acquisition will be an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $1.1 billion, net of cash assumed.

SiSense, a provider of big data analytics for business users, has added $30 million in new financing, which it plans to use to continue expanding its global footprint. Current customers include Target, eBay, ESPN, Samsung and Wix. The new financing was led by venture capital firm DFJ Growth, with participation from existing investors Battery Ventures, Genesis Partners and Opus Capital.

Oracle president Mark Hurd and Oracle executive vice president John Fowler showcased Solaris 11.2 during a recent event in New York City. A complete, integrated and open platform engineered for large-scale cloud environments, Solaris 11.2 combines OpenStack, SDN technology, clustering, and virtualization with an enterprise-class OS. Oracle Solaris is one of two operating system options for Oracle Exadata, and is described by Oracle as a key building block that provides mission-critical reliability, performance, and security that are essential for database consolidation. According to Hurd, cloud and engineered systems are both driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently.

With Oracle's new ZS3 Series for backup, Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-BA, the company is providing customers with a pre-configured, pre-racked solution co-engineered with Oracle Database to provide extreme backup and restore performance to help meet SLAs. According to Oracle, ZS3-BA helps ensure backup and recovery SLAs are met by scaling to 26 TB/hr for full backups and 17 TB/hr for full restores - a 30% increase for backups and 80% increase for restores over the previous generation.

At an event at Oracle's headquarters, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison showcased the new Oracle Database In-Memory, an additional option to the Oracle Database 12c. Oracle Database In-Memory is scheduled for release in July, said Ellison. The Oracle Database In-Memory is the underpinning of finally making the real-time enterprise a reality, explained Tim Shetler, Oracle vice president of product management, in an interview before the launch event in which he highlighted the key elements of the release. "We have built this in-memory option to be completely transparent to the huge ecosystem of Oracle Database customers and applications that are already written for the Oracle Database."
