Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak software, has announced that, in collaboration with Cisco, it has developed a framework enabling the Riak KV NoSQL database to run on Apache Mesos, bringing operational efficiency and high-elasticity to big data services. "The goal is to try and simplify and make it easy for clients to get business solutions as quickly as possible instead of worrying about the distributed data tier," said Adam Wray, CEO of Basho.

HP is enhancing its Vertica platform to allow organizations to quickly ingest and analyze high-speed streaming data from various sources, including IoT applications. The new version of Vertica, dubbed "Excavator," is integrated with Apache Kafka to allow organizations to analyze volumes of data in real-time.

Pepperdata has arrived on the big data scene with the goal of controlling workflows in Hadoop to optimize cluster performance. Pepperdata's solution, called Pepperdata Supervisor, installs quickly and seamlessly, ensures SLAs, and prioritizes jobs and resources so that mission-critical jobs get priority, according to Sean Suchter, co-founder and CEO of Pepperdata.

Data integration software provider Informatica has been acquired by a company controlled by the Permira funds and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Microsoft Corporation and Salesforce Ventures, Salesforce's corporate investment group, are also strategic investors in the company alongside the Permira funds and CPPIB. In making the announcement, Informatica said the new ownership would allow it continue to grow while taking a longer view rather than focusing on quarters.

Google, whose name became synonymous with internet search, is reorganizing to maintain its innovation and competitiveness. The company is creating a new public holding company called Alphabet, with Google as well as other companies, housed within the new structure. According to Larry Page, CEO of Google, the reorganization is part of an effort to avoid getting "too comfortable," observing in a blog post that in the tech industry, "where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.

Shortly after the explosion of non-relational databases, around 2009, it became apparent that rather than being part of the problem, SQL would instead continue to be part of the solution. If the new wave of database systems excluded the vast population of SQL-literate professionals, then their uptake in the business world would be impeded. Furthermore, a whole generation of business intelligence tools use SQL as the common way of translating user information requests into database queries. Nowhere was the drive toward SQL adoption more clear than in the case of Hadoop.

In 1965, Dick Pick and Don Nelson originally implemented PICK as the "Generalized Information Retrieval Language System" (GIRLS) on an IBM System/360 at TRW for use by the U.S. Army to control the inventory of Cheyenne helicopter parts. That was 50 years ago and MultiValue is still thriving today. It is a testament to the quality and flexibility of the technology for it to be going strong 50 years after its creation. Coincidentally, Rocket Software is also marking a significant event as it celebrates 25 years in business.

IBM launched a new program intended to mentor and energize students to innovate using IBM Cloud technologies. The program, called the Academic Initiative for Cloud, will create cloud development curricula using Bluemix, IBM's platform-as-a-service, in over 200 universities, reaching more than 20,000 students in 36 countries.
