Rocana, which provides a platform for managing IT operations, is adding new capabilities for the search, ingest, and analysis of operational data. The new release addresses three different dimensions of operational data, according to Eric Sammer, Rocana CTO and co-founder. "We think about this as depth of visibility; the breadth across wired data, application data, infrastructure information, and so on; and range of time."

Oracle has unveiled two new models of its Oracle Database Appliance, addressing the needs of small and mid-sized businesses. "Many organizations do not have the time, resources or expertise to build their own system and often struggle managing different platforms and systems. By offering a pre-integrated solution that is optimized for the database and the cloud, Oracle allows organizations of all sizes to free up their IT staff from maintenance and other routine tasks to focus on innovation and core business processes." said Karen Sigman, VP, Converged Infrastructure, Oracle.

Cisco has unveiled Cisco Tetration Analytics, which is designed to help customers gain wider visibility across all aspects of their data center in real time. The data center analytics platform gathers telemetry from hardware and software sensors, and then analyzes the information using advanced machine learning techniques to address critical data center operations such as policy compliance, application forensics, and the move to a whitelist security model. "Think of it as a time machine for your data center," said Yogesh Kaushik, senior director of product management, Tetration, Cisco.

Splice Machine has announced that it is releasing its database management system, a dual-engine RDBMS powered by Hadoop and Spark, as an open source platform. The community edition will be free for members of the open source community, allowing them to use as well as modify source code, whereas the enterprise edition will include a set of proprietary tools focused on operational features that enable DBAs and DevOps teams to maintain, tune, and keep the platform secure while it's live.

The two entities, together with other open source contributors, have built a new open source Apache licensed REST-based Spark Service, called Livy, which is still in early alpha development.

For those who haven't encountered the term, the "trough of disillusionment" is a standard phase within the Gartner hype cycle. New technologies are expected to pass from a "peak of inflated expectations" through the trough of disillusionment before eventually reaching the "plateau of productivity." Most new technologies are expected to go through this trough, so it's hardly surprising to find big data entering this phase.

They claim users need more, users need better … and they are there to help.
