Micro Focus has announced the results of its new COBOL survey that reveals the latest global developments and 2022 plans for enterprises utilizing COBOL and mainframe technology. The survey found that not only is COBOL continually viewed as strategic by 92% of respondents, but that the amount of COBOL code has significantly increased.

According to the "IBM Cyber Resilient Organization" study, 46% of respondents have experienced a ransomware attack over the past 2 years. To help companies better detect and recover quickly from ransomware and other cyberattacks, IBM recently unveiled IBM FlashSystem Cyber Vault. The company also announced new FlashSystem storage models—based on IBM Spectrum Virtualize to provide a single and consistent operating environment—that are designed to increase cyber resilience and application performance within a hybrid cloud environment.

These include plans to deliver IBM Z as-a-service on IBM Cloud for development and test in the second half of 2022, as well as additional tools for developing hybrid applications. According to the IBM Institute for Business Value study, "Application Modernization on the Mainframe," 71% of responding executives say mainframe-based applications are central to their business strategy.

Cloudentity, a provider of application identity and authorization software, has released GraphQL support capabilities that secure GraphQL application programming interfaces (APIs). According to Cloudentity, GraphQL adoption continues to double year-over-year within the developer community, and it's estimated that millions of developers will use GraphQL for projects over the next few years. This widespread adoption is spurred by the user-friendly description of data in APIs that GraphQL provides. However, the company contends, while GraphQL APIs accelerate application development, save time and resources, and improve the developer experience, they also create new security risks and challenges for API data leakage.

Software intelligence company Dynatrace has extended the Dynatrace platform's observability and advanced AIOps capabilities to all major serverless architectures. Intel has announced plans for an initial investment of more than $20 billion in the construction of two new leading-edge chip factories in Ohio. The investment will help boost production to meet the surging demand for advanced semiconductors. Planning for the first two factories will start immediately, with construction expected to begin late in 2022. Production is expected to come online in 2025, when the fab will deliver chips using the industry's most advanced transistor technologies.

NVIDIA announced that its AI Enterprise 1.1 is now generally available, bringing new updates including production support for containerized AI with the NVIDIA software on VMware vSphere with Tanzu, which was previously only available on a trial basis. Now, enterprises can run accelerated AI workloads on vSphere, running in both Kubernetes containers and virtual machines with NVIDIA AI Enterprise to support advanced AI development on mainstream IT infrastructure.

IBM and Francisco Partners have signed a definitive agreement under which Francisco Partners will acquire healthcare data and analytics assets from IBM that are currently part of the Watson Health business. The agreement with Francisco Partners is "a clear next step as IBM becomes even more focused on our platform-based hybrid cloud and AI strategy," said Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president, IBM Software.

Vista Equity Partners, a global investment firm focused exclusively on enterprise software, data, and technology-enabled businesses, and Evergreen Coast Capital, an affiliate of Elliott Investment Management L.P., have entered into a deal to acquire Citrix in an all-cash transaction valued at $16.5 billion. Vista and Evergreen intend to combine Citrix and TIBCO Software, one of Vista's portfolio companies. The companies say this union will create one of the world's largest software providers, serving 400,000 customers, including 98% of the Fortune 500, with 100 million users in 100 countries.

MariaDB Corporation Ab has announced its intention to become a publicly listed company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in partnership with NYSE-listed Angel Pond Holdings. According to MariaDB, the transaction reflects an implied enterprise value of the combined company of approximately $672 million, representing 14.2x expected fiscal 2022 (ending September 2022) revenue of $47.4 million. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of fiscal year 2022.
