A new survey of 430 members of the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) reveals that organizations lack a sense of urgency about securing critical data, and the greatest challenges to securing application and data environments are primarily organizational and budget related. The OAUG's 2011 Data Security report, "Managing Information in Insecure Times," was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information today, Inc., in partnership with Application Security, Inc. (AppSec) in December 2010. Fifty-three percent of respondents stated that budget was the greatest impediment holding back information security efforts. Thirty-three percent claimed a lack of an understanding of the threats prevents them from rallying support for countermeasures. And more than one-quarter of respondents cited a disconnect between IT teams and executive management as a major impediment to implementing proper security measures.

Quest Software has unveiled support for Apache Hive in its two free NoSQL tools, Toad for Cloud Databases and OraOop. Additional enhancements include Eclipse support in Toad for Cloud Databases, and full support for Oracle RAC in OraOop. A recent Unisys poll which was completed on January 24 found that 44% felt that 44% of the people responding expect to make cloud computing their top IT investment priority in 2011. Unisys reported fourth quarter 2010 and full-year results for 2010. The company reported increased operating profit margin to 12.9% in 4Q10 and 9.3% for the full year.Other highlights included 5% growth in ClearPath sales for the full year, as well as technology revenue flat at $562 million for the full year compared to declines in prior years. The company also achieved 4Q10 services operating profit margin of 8%, the second consecutive quarter within targeted range of 8 - 10%. "We made continued progress against our priorities in 2010 and entered 2011 in what we believe is a strong competitive position," said Ed Coleman, Unisys chairman and CEO, in his comments on the financial results during the company's earnings call.

EMC has introduced a free Community Edition of the EMC Greenplum Database, the high-performance massively parallel processing (MPP) database product, along with free analytic algorithms and data mining tools. The market for data warehouse appliances - solutions consisting of integrated software and hardware - is heating up, with new twists emerging from both established and new appliance vendors. Netezza, an early proponent of the appliance approach, was acquired in November 2010 by IBM. IBM announced bullish fourth-quarter and 2010 year-end results for software and solutions sales, marking an acceleration in the resurgence from the recent economic slump. The company said its fourth-quarter net income was $5.3 billion, an increase of 9% over $4.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009. Total revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 were $29 billion, an increase of 7%. Revenues from System z mainframe server products increased 69% compared with the year-ago period. Total delivery of System z computing power, as measured in MIPS (millions of instructions per second), increased 58%.
