Veryant has introduced a new version of vCOBOL Enterprise, which provides an environment for developing and deploying business-critical COBOL applications across Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft Windows systems. With vCOBOL Enterprise 2011 Release 3, organizations that migrate COBOL applications and relational databases, such as IBM DB2, from the mainframe to open systems can now take advantage of a new application migration utility to simplify the transition. In addition, post-migration, vCOBOL now offers companies the choice of accessing relational databases, such as IBM DB2 or Oracle, through JDBC or through the SQLJ convention, which the company says is popular at shops that are heavy Java application users.

The release of OpenInsight 9.3, the next version of Revelation Software's flagship product, is now imminent, and includes many new features eagerly awaited by Revelation customers. On track to be generally available by the end of the year, Robert Catalano, director of sales at Revelation, says that data encryption is among the major new components in OpenInsight 9.3. "Data encryption will be a key component that will be built into the database. It is data encryption at rest and that means that you can specify tables and fields that are sitting in on your disk drive and that data will be encrypted."

SAP AG has announced the availability of SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) 7.3 running on the SAP HANA platform. SAP HANA can enhance the query performance and provide faster data loads in SAP NetWeaver BW, and help customers significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for customers by simplifying the administration with reduced data layers, according to SAP. The announcement was made at the SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd co-located event in Madrid.

Cleversafe, Inc. has been granted and issued four new patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) related to the vendor's IP portfolio around dispersed storage technology. EnterpriseDB, a commercial software company supporting the PostgreSQL open source database, has announced the Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop, which enables massive amounts of data from a Postgres Plus Advanced Server (PPAS) or PostgreSQL database to be accessed, processed and analyzed in a Hadoop cluster. The Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop enables programmers to process large amounts of SQL-based data using their familiar MapReduce constructs. EnterpriseDB has opened a private Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop beta program.

Quest Software has begun shipping a version of its Toad data management toolkit for cloud or NoSQL databases, available as a fully functional, commercial-grade product, for free. While the term 'cloud databases' is in the product name, the toolkit is intended for a variety of non-relational databases in both cloud and on-premises settings, John Whittaker, senior manager of product marketing for Quest, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "It's for big data, NoSQL, non-relational databases, which are commonly called 'cloud databases' in the industry," he explains. "We look at them as cloud databases because they were born out of the likes of Yahoo and Google." However, he adds, "this technology doesn't have to live in the cloud. It can be in a variety of places."

Unisys Corporation recently reported third-quarter 2011 net income from continuing operations of $78.6 million, compared with third-quarter 2010 net income from continuing operations of $21.8 million. Revenue in the third quarter of 2011 grew 6% to $1.02 billion compared with $961 million in the year-ago quarter. Foreign currency fluctuations had a positive impact on revenue in the quarter of almost 6 percentage points, the company said. "This was a strong quarter for Unisys," said Unisys chairman and CEO Ed Coleman during a Unisys webcast announcing the quarter results. "We grew our revenue and tripled EPS from continuing operations as we benefited from the foundational work we've been doing to strengthening our competitive and financial profile."

Unisys has announced additions to its family of voice-messaging solutions that enable telecommunications services providers to host a greater number of services more efficiently and give mobile subscribers new options for reaching contacts and accessing their voice messages. Anchoring the solutions is the VSE Model 412 server, the newest member of the Unisys VoiceSource Express (VSE) 400 Series of messaging and converged user services platforms. Unisys also introduced new software-based solutions that make managing voice messages simpler for subscribers using smartphones and less fully configured feature phones.

People will go to great lengths to avoid identity theft, and many say they would take legal action against government or private organizations that compromise their personal data, according to new research conducted by Unisys. Nearly 90% of the survey respondents said they would take some sort of action in the event of a data breach, ranging from conservative solutions like changing their passwords (87%) to those with more serious commercial implications, such as closing their accounts (76%) or taking legal action (53%).

The Oracle NoSQL Database, which was announced at Oracle OpenWorld, is now available for download from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Oracle also said that its new engineered system, the Oracle Big Data Appliance, an optimized platform for running the Oracle NoSQL Database and Oracle's other big data offerings that was also unveiled at OpenWorld, will ship in Q1 of the 2012 calendar year.

Oracle has entered into an agreement to acquire Endeca Technologies, Inc., a provider of unstructured data management, web commerce and business intelligence solutions. "Together, we will provide best-in-class technology to manage structured and unstructured data together; business intelligence tools to analyze structured and unstructured data together; and a broad suite of packaged applications which extends the value of unstructured data into ERP, Supply Chain, CRM, EPM, Web Commerce, and specialized applications," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, Oracle Development, in an announcement issued by Oracle. "This technology will also allow us to integrate more comprehensive unstructured data management into Oracle's engineered systems."

SUSE has released an early development snapshot of its OpenStack-powered cloud infrastructure solution. SUSE Cloud powered by OpenStack, says SUSE, is the industry's first, fully configured, OpenStack-powered appliance based on OpenStack's latest version, Diablo. It is also the first public preview of SUSE's hypervisor-agnostic, operating system neutral, open source cloud infrastructure solution.
